Healthcare is of primary importance to Cape Codders. Many of us have chosen to live here because of life-quality issues, and good health is one of them. We are blessed with a number of facilities that help us stay healthy; more and more of those facilities have been able to offer us sophisticated healthcare services that once required a trip to Boston. Those who live and work here are also concerned with being able to meet the healthcare needs of visitors. And the Cape has a relatively high percentage of elderly residents who need access to healthcare. For those reasons, rescue units in every town are well-equipped and well-prepared, with extra staff on hand or on call in the busy summer months. Medical clinics as well as many family practices accept walk-in patients.

Cape Cod is also a place where venerable traditions and promising innovations have met in the formation and growth of a new health care system - Cape Cod Health Care.

Cape Cod Healthcare began in 1996 with the merger of Falmouth Hospital and Cape Cod Hospital. This newly formed health system serves all 15 towns along the 70-mile peninsula that is the Cape. Cape Cod Healthcare, more than an administrative structure or just a new name, embodies a new philosophy of how health-related services should be delivered to the community.

Before the merger, healthcare on the Cape was defined traditionally - treatment of the ill and injured. Cape Cod Healthcare now offers a comprehensive range of health services, including those that maintain health. In addition, the Cape has a number of specialized and general healthcare clinics, many with 24-hour emergency service. Look for listings in this chapter.

Another valuable resource offered here is Cape Cod Ask-A-Nurse, (800) 544-2424, which is available 24 hours a day and provides accurate answers to healthcare questions.
